Mars Hill’s Christian Stampler was tabbed the Astroturf South Atlantic Conference Baseball Player of the Week.
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Mars Hill's Christian Stampler was tabbed the Astroturf South Atlantic Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while McKenly Berry of Tusculum was tabbed the Astroturf South Atlantic Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week for games played March 27-April 2, the League announced today.
Stampler, a junior from Davie, Fla., slugged .833 with seven hits, four RBI and one home run to lead the Lions to a 4-0 record last week. He posted a hit in all four games and highlighted his week with three hits, a homer and four RBI in a 12-4 win over Brevard in game one of the double-header on April 1. He added four runs scored in the four-game span and finished with an on base percentage of .643. The honor marks his first Player of the Week nod this season.
Berry, a graduate student from Elizabethton, Tenn., recorded two saves as the Pioneers rallied to a pair of victories last week. In Tusculum's 13-10 road win at Lee on March 28, he faced a bases-loaded and no-out situation in the bottom of the ninth inning, but worked out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts and a ground out to end the game. Against Lincoln Memorial on April 1, he inherited another jam in the 8th inning as he faced another bases-loaded situation, this time with one out. He ended the threat with a strikeout and a fly out to preserve the 4-3 lead. Berry pitched 2.2 shutout innings of work on the week and finished with five strikeouts. The award is his first Pitcher of the Week plaudit this season.
