Mars Hill takes down EHC on road in SAC action
The Mars Hill football team (5-1, 4-1 SAC) defeated Emory & Henry (3-4, 2-3 SAC) by a score of 24-14 Saturday afternoon on the road.
EMORY, Va. - The Mars Hill football team (5-1, 4-1 SAC) defeated Emory & Henry (3-4, 2-3 SAC) by a score of 24-14 Saturday afternoon on the road.
The Lions opened the scoring with 7:42 left in the first quarter as JR Martin capped off a 10 play, 74 yard drive with a six-yard rushing score. Less than three minutes later, the Wasps took the 7-6 lead off of a J'Quan Anderson 40-yard scamper.
Mars Hill retook the lead in the 2:26 into the second quarter as Simeon Thompson was on the receiving end of a five-yard strike from Martin. The Lions' two-point conversion was a success, giving them the 14-7 lead. Nine minutes later, Jakari Mozelle's six-yard reception allowed the Wasps to tie the contest at 14.
With under 30 seconds remaining in the half, Lon Teachey sent the Lions into the half with the 17-14 advantage, hitting a 37-yard field goal.
Malik Laurent's 33-yard touchdown reception extended the Mars Hill lead to 10 just 3:37 into the third.
Another phenomenal defensive half by the Lions held the opponent scoreless in the final 30 minutes of play. Throughout the contest, the Lions racked up five sacks for 49 yards.
The Lions outgained Emory & Henry 340-188 with 239 yards coming through the air.
Martin threw for 239 and ran for five, combining for three scores. Jon Gullette led the Lions with 87 yards on the ground while Beau DeBerry hauled in a team-high four receptions for 85 yards.
Landon Honeycutt led all players with 11 tackles, two for loss. Dexter Fitzpatrick posted 10 tackles, 1.5 for loss, and one sack. Damipi Lamboni led all players with 2.5 sacks, totalling an Emory & Henry loss of 25 yards.
Mars Hill returns to action on the road on Saturday, October 21 when they face Carson-Newman. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
