Gilyard, Daniel named to SAC All-Freshman Team
Mars Hill's Austin Gilyard and Nassyr Daniel were named to the 2017-18 South Atlantic Conference All-Freshman men's basketball team, as announced by the league on Thursday afternoon.
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Mars Hill's Austin Gilyard and Nassyr Daniel were named to the 2017-18 South Atlantic Conference All-Freshman men's basketball team, as announced by the league on Thursday afternoon.
Gilyard, a Winston-Salem, North Carolina native, appeared in 24 games for the Lions that included 10 starts. He averaged 11.5 points per game and shot 37 percent from beyond the arc. Gilyard scored 20 points or more in five games, including a career-high 25 against Coker on February 3 in Stanford Arena. He finished third in team scoring with 276 points. Gilyard also led the league in free throw percentage, shooting 88.6 percent from the line, including the two winning free throws in the upset victory over Carson-Newman on January 24 at home.
Daniel appeared in 21 games for Mars Hill, including 18 starts. The 6-foot-8-inch native of Fayetteville, North Carolina shot a team-high 57 percent from the field and finished sixth in team scoring with 186 points, averaging 8.9 points per game. Daniel finished third in the league in blocks per game (1.7) and 12th in rebounds per game (6.1). He led Mars Hill in blocks with 35, 29 better than Justen Hartfield and Luke Van-Rijn who were tied for second on the team. Daniel and Brandon Watkins tied for the team lead with 129 rebounds.
