HARROGATE, Tenn. - The Mars Hill men's soccer team fell 3-1 to Lincoln Memorial in South Atlantic Conference quarterfinal action Tuesday afternoon. Elliot Tate scored the lone goal for the Lions.
Lincoln Memorial scored three unanswered goals in the second half to advance to the semifinals, awaiting the winner of the Wingate/Newberry contest.
The Railsplitters tied the game in the 59' minute as Henrique Rezek knocked home a loose ball inside the box for his third of the season.
SAC regular season scoring leader Danilo da Silva put LMU up 2-1 in the 70' minute with his 12th of the season. Splitting the Lions defense and receiving a long pass from Victor Peres, da Silva put the ball low past Lions' goalkeeper, Ben Lucas.
Felipe de Sousa would extend the Railsplitters' lead by two with his fourth of the season. Miguel Reis was leading a breakaway and froze Lucas in goal before passing the ball to his left to find de Sousa open for the easy tap-in.
With less than two minutes remaining in the first half, Tate was fouled inside the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Tate converted for his first of the season to put Mars Hill up 1-0 heading into halftime.
Lincoln Memorial outshot Mars Hill 23-11 and came away with their first victory over the Lions in Harrogate since 2010.
The Lions end the 2017 season with a record of 5-8-2 (4-5-2 SAC). Lincoln Memorial improved to 10-3-3 (5-3-3 SAC).
