Lions Place Second at Spartanburg Eye Opener

SPARTANBURG, S.C.-- Mars Hill's men's cross country team placed second among Division II schools in the Spartanburg Eye Opener, held Friday evening.
The Lions finished with 53 points. Alex Griggs and Derek Gibson placed second and third respectively. Griggs finished in 26:33.30, three seconds behind individual champ Spence Frantom of King (Tenn.). Gibson finished just behind with a time of 26:39.05. King (Tenn.) placed first among Division II teams in the meet with 36 points. Twelve Division II schools competed in the event.
Cesar Reyes added an eighth-place finish for Mars Hill. The sophomore turned in a time of 26:33.30. Brady Adcock (18th overall) and Kiel Bollero (22nd) rounded out Mars Hill's top five.
Lion runners as a whole averaged a time of 27:09.75, fourth-best among all teams in the event. Mars Hill and King (Tenn.) were the only two schools with three runners in the top 10.
Mars Hill's next race will come Sep. 14, when the Lions compete in the Montreat Invitational/SAC Preview Meet in Montreat, N.C.
