Mars Hill Men with highest finish in five years at NCAA DII Southeast Regional Championship
The Mars Hill men's cross country team placed 20th out of 36 teams for their highest finish in five years at the NCAA DII Southeast Regional Championship.
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Mars Hill men's cross country team had their highest finish in five years at the NCAA DII Southeast Regional Championship at Milliken Research Park in Spartanburg, S.C. during the running of the 10k race. The Mars Hill men's team ran strong as a pack to finish in 20th place out of 36 teams in the southeast region.
On a rolling and curvy cross country race course, the Lions were led by junior Braxton Cummings in a time of 33:59 over the 10k course. He was followed closely by freshman Eli Taylor, sophomore Brandon Wright, freshman Matthew O'Connor, and freshman Charles Fuerneisen to round out the top 5 scoring runners.
Thoughts from Coach Benge:
"The guys all ran nearly the entire first 5k together before spreading out a bit over the second half of the race. With such a freshmen-heavy team this year, the transition to their first 10k race is always tough, but the men persevered well. While we did hope to finish a few spots higher, this was a solid five rank improvement from last year and is the men's highest finish in five years and is a good building block heading into track season and training for the next cross country season. It is especially exciting to return all the guys next year as they get faster and stronger with more miles under their legs as we plan to compete for the top ten teams in the region!"
