CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Mars Hill baseball team (11-13, 5-4 SAC) defeated Queens University (13-12, 7-3 SAC) in game one of a three-game conference series by a score of 4-3 on Friday afternoon.
The Lions' offense started the game off hot, putting three runs on the board in the top half of the first inning thanks to a two-run triple coming from the bat of Kyle Jenkins. Jenkins would score moments later from a Jordan Lathe single to center field.
Through the next three innings, the Royals would go on to plate a pair of runs themselves, thanks in part to Dillon Lewis' sacrifice fly that plated Carter Foster.
In the top half of fourth, Chad Sikes would add an insurance run for the Lions, scoring Lathe on a bunt single to first base, bringing the Lions' run total to four, which proved to be enough to earn the victory.
Sam Kaplan (3-1) took the bump for the Lions to open the game and threw 5.2 complete innings, earning his third win of the season. Connor Presnell entered the game in relief, throwing 3.1 hitless innings to earn his first save of the season. The Royals' Nick Charleson (4-4) went 5.1 innings into the game, gave up seven hits, and was given his fourth loss on the season.
Game two of the series is set for 12 p.m. tomorrow, with the third and final game to follow.
