MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill men's lacrosse team (0-1) dropped their season opener, 19-12, versus Montevallo (1-1) Saturday afternoon at home.
Montevallo netted five goals in the first, including a streak of three straight, started by Jackson Neufeld. Scott Friant and Andru Ross followed, putting the Falcons up by a score of 4-1. Two straight Mars Hill goals from Zac Carrigan—his second of the frame—and Tremain Hill pulled the game within one, but Thomas Vaesen's goal in the final minute reestablished the two-goal advantage.
Vaesen, who collected three points in the first, opened the second quarter with two goals to complete the natural hat-trick. Friant added his second with under 10 minutes to play in the half. The Lions scored two of the next three goals, both from the stick of Spencer Andrews, to pull within four. Vaesen once again scored back-to-back goals and helped the Falcons carry an 11-6 lead into the half.
Vaesen continued his hot streak, scoring four of the five Falcons' goals in the third frame. Andrews, Tremain Hill, and Zach Wright scored the three third quarter goals for the Lions.
The teams traded goals all throughout the fourth, with each scoring three. Both Andrews and Carrigan netted their fourth of the contests while Hill added his second.
Vaesen led all players with 11 points (9g, 2a) while Dante Cloutier record four points (2g, 2a). Andrews and Carrigan led the Lions with four points apiece while Hill added three.
The Lions return to action on Tuesday, February 11 when they host Lees-McRae. Faceoff is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start.
