Mars Hill takes down Lees-McRae, 20-13
The Mars Hill men's lacrosse team (1-1) picked up their first win of the season, defeating Lees-McRae (0-3) by a score of 20-13 Tuesday evening.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's lacrosse team (1-1) picked up their first win of the season, defeating Lees-McRae (0-3) by a score of 20-13 Tuesday evening.
The Lions, entering the second half trailing 10-9, dictated play in the second half, outscoring Lees-McRae 11-3 in the final 30 minutes of play. To kick off the second half, the teams traded goals, keeping the Bobcats up by one. A Mars Hill 4-0 run provided the Lions their first lead since the first quarter. Goals from Jackson Courson, Justin Lundy, Spencer Andrews, and Tremain Hill pushed the Lions to a lead they would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest.
Andrews and Zac Carrigan opened the scoring in the fourth just 25 seconds apart. Mars Hill closed out the game on another 4-0 run that saw Andrews collected two more goals.
The first frame saw Mars Hill go up 2-0 before the Bobcats responded with two straight goals of their own to tie the contest. Lees-McRae would take the lead midway through the first with back-to-back goals from Jackson Galloway.
Galloway continued his stellar offensive performance in the second, posting two goals and three assists to help lead Lees-McRae to a 10-9 advantage after the first 30 minutes of play. Lees-McRae used a 3-0 early in the second to go up 7-4. The Lions responded with two straight goals from Carrigan and Courson and ended the frame by netting two goals in the final minute with Carrigan's fourth goal of the game coming with four seconds remaining in the half.
Mars Hill dominated play in the faceoff circle with Frankie Villeneuve winning 26-of-33 draws. Mars Hill outshot Lees-McRae 56-30 on the day.
Andrews led all players with six goals on the day and matched the Bobcats' Galloway (5g, 4a) with nine points. Courson picked up seven points (3g, 4a) while Carrigan ended the day with six points (5g, 1a).
Mars Hill continues their five-game homestand on Saturday, February 15 when they host Lindenwood. The contest is slated for a 12 p.m. start.
