Johnson leads Lions' offense in home contest versus C-N

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's basketball team (1-14, 1-14 SAC) was defeated 98-66 by the hands of Carson-Newman (13-5, 11-5 SAC) Thursday night.
After a close first half, the Eagles, led by Tripp Davis, carried over their momentum and shot over 64 percent from the floor. Davis went 6-of-7 from the floor for 15 points, collecting five rebounds and nabbing six steals. Tyler Bowens, off the bench, added eight points.
Isayah Johnson and Justus Shelton paced the Lions' offense with eight points apiece. David Elkins netted four points to go along with three assists. Jordan Gant hit two three-pointers to add six points off the bench.
Johnson and EJ Bush led their respective teams in the first half, each scoring 11 points.
Carson-Newman opened the game on a 10-2 run and held the lead until the 11:28 mark of the first half. A layup by Michael Houge provided the Lions their only lead of the game. The Eagles snagged the lead back moments later and led by as many as seven with just under four minutes to play.
A three-pointer from Austin Gilyard cut the deficit to three, but an Eagles 7-0 run to close out the half saw them lead 44-34 after 20 minutes of play.
Davis led all players with 22 points, seven steals, and six rebounds. Bush added 20 followed by Nick Brenegan's 10 on the night.
Johnson recorded 19 points and five rebounds in 30 minutes of action. Shelton scored a career-high 12 points and also pulled down five rebounds.
The Lions host Newberry on Saturday, February 20 at 2 p.m. inside Chambers Gymnasium.
