Men's Soccer Loses to Coker in Overtime
Coker defeated the Lions in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action 2-1 in overtime Saturday night in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.

MARS HILL, N.C. – Coker defeated the Lions in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action 2-1 in overtime Saturday night in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. Mars Hill fell to 2-5-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the SAC. The Cobras improved to 2-5-1 on the season and 2-3 in the league.
Amine Merdjett gave the Lions a 1-0 advantage at the 30:01 mark. Stian Sanner stole ball, then passed the ball to Robert Taylor who quickly found Merdjett for the open shot. That was all the scoring the first half would see.
Johnny Martinez tied the contest with just over three minutes left in regulation (86:38) when he scored off a free kick that was quickly passed from Jarrian Cuter. That score sent the teams into overtime.
Ian Fellenz scored the match winner at the 92:29 mark in the first overtime period when he found the back of the net off a header from a corner kick. The corner kick was sent in by Mads Aagurd.
Total shots were knotted at 15 apiece. Coker edged the Lions in corner kicks 7-4. Connor Talbot played all 92:29 in goal for Mars Hill and made two saves. Kyndle Cobb also played the entire match in the net for the Cobras and made three saves.
Mars Hill will travel to Hickory, N.C., on Wednesday to face the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne. Match time is set for a 7:30 p.m. start.
