Lions land several in finals at Liberty Indoor Open
The Mars Hill men's indoor track & field team travelled to Lynchburg, Virginia to compete in the Liberty Indoor Open, hosted by Liberty University.
LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Mars Hill men's indoor track & field team travelled to Lynchburg, Virginia to compete in the Liberty Indoor Open, hosted by Liberty University. Competition took place on Saturday, February 3rd. 40+ NCAA DI, DII, DII and NAIA teams competed in the meet.
Several Lions earned trips to the finals in their respective events. Personal and season bests were set by many.
Men's Highlights
Throws
Jesse Shelton placed third overall in Section A of the Men's Shot Put with a throw of 16.75m. Shelton currently ranks first overall in SAC Conference standings and 13th overall in NCAA DII.
Justus Shelton placed 22nd overall with a throw of 13.44m
Ashtin Gainey and Jasiah Robinson represented Mars Hill in the Collegiate Shot Put division. Gainey placed fifth overall in the division with a personal best throw of 12.50m. Robinson placed 16th overall with a throw of 11.26m.
Jumps
Jared Benain competed in the Triple Jump. Benain earned a trip to the finals with a jump of 14.25m. In the finals, Benain improved with a jump of 14.32m and finished fourth overall on the day. Benain currently ranks fourth overall in SAC Conference standings and 24th overall in NCAA DII.
Benain also competed in the Long Jump, placing 11th overall with a jump of 6.61m.
Levi Higgins competed in the High Jump. Higgins jumped a season best 1.9m, finishing 13th overall on the day.
Distance
Braxton Taft Cummings and Brandon Wright both established personal bests in the Men's Mile. Cummings placed 42nd overall with a personal best time of 4:35.62. Wright placed 62nd overall with a time of 4:45.46. Wright competed in the men's 800m, establishing a personal collegiate best 2:05.67.
Johnathan McIntyre competed in his first collegiate 800m, placing 77th overall with a time of 2:10.84.
Sprints
Ethan Lee competed in the men's 60m and 200m. Lee placed 43rd in the 60m with a time of 7.3s and 56th overall in the 200m with a season best 23.32s.
Connor Cecil established new personal bests in both the men's 400m and 200m sprints. Cecil placed 58th overall in the 400m with a PR of 55.97s. Cecil followed up the 400m with a PR of 25.23s in the 200m.

The team travels a short distance to Tryon, North Carolina to compete in the Tryon International College Opener hosted by Newberry College this Tuesday, February 6.
