Lions felled by Montevallo in non-conference play

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill women's lacrosse team (2-1) was defeated by Montevallo (2-2) by a score of 14-7 Friday night.
Montevallo scored eight unanswered goals in the final 15 minutes of play to come from behind and pick up the road win. Kiley Shea and Mikaela Barbieri each netted two in the run.
Mars Hill led 5-1 after 30 minutes of play with Samantha Newton's hat-trick leading the Lions' offense. Chandler Werner added two points with a goal and an assist. Mars Hill shutout Montevallo in the second, 4-0, with Newton recording her natural hat-trick.
The Lions outshot Montevallo 11-4 in the half and won six of the eight draw controls. Mars Hill was a perfect 14-of-14 in clear attempts while the Falcons only converted on half of their attempts, going 8-of-16.
Montevallo rallied in the third quarter, outscoring the Lions 5-2 with Anja Kuys and Barbieri each scoring two goals. The Falcons trailed by just one entering the final 15 minutes of play.
The trio of Barbieri (4g), Kuys (4g), and Jodi Morawiec (2g, 2a) each posted four points to lead all players. Newton led the Lions with three goals.
Mars Hill takes to the road on Wednesday, February 22 when they face Lee. First draw is set for 6 p.m.
