Mars Hill downs C-N late in crucial SAC Mountain Division clash
The Mars Hill football team (6-1, 5-1 SAC) defeated Carson-Newman (3-5, 2-4 SAC) by a score of 21-17 Saturday afternoon on the road in a crucial South Atlantic Conference Mountain Division contest.
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Mars Hill football team (6-1, 5-1 SAC) defeated Carson-Newman (3-5, 2-4 SAC) by a score of 21-17 Saturday afternoon on the road in a crucial South Atlantic Conference Mountain Division contest.
The Lions trailed 17-14 for the majority of the fourth quarter before a nine-play, 89-yard drive was capped off by JR Martin's two-yard rush to put the Lions up 21-17 with 1:17 remaining.
Carson-Newman opened the scoring in the first as Andrew Sybert hit a 37-yard field goal. Just 1:45 into the second, Simeon Thompson's 40-yard touchdown reception gave the Lions' their first lead of the afternoon. The Lions carried the advantage into the half.
The teams traded touchdowns in the third. After Carson-Newman went up 10-7 following Tyree Nelson's 37-yard run, Mars Hill answered as Beau DeBerry hauled in a 10-yard pass from Martin with 4:32 left to play in the quarter.
Martin went 15-for-20 for 186 yards and two scores. He added 26 yards on the ground. Thompson led the Lions with 57 receiving yards on two catches for one score. Malik Laurent led all players with six receptions.
Landon Honeycutt led all players with 13 tackles with one sack and two tackles for loss. Tarshawn Reed recorded 12 tackles followed by 10 apiece from Octaveus Askew and Dexter Fitzpatrick. Askew led the team with three tackles for loss and one interception.
The Lions return home on Saturday, October 28 when they host UVA Wise. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
