Lions' defensive stand holds off Wolves on Senior Day

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill football team (8-2, 7-2 SAC) defeated Newberry (4-7, 3-6 SAC) by a score of 21-14 Saturday to conclude the regular season.
Mars Hill led 21-0 entering the fourth before the Wolves scored 14 unanswered. With under 10 seconds to play, a strong push by the defensive line forced an errant pass out of play as the clock struck zero as the Lions held on for their eighth win of the season.
Ja'Hari Mitchell opened the scoring just 4:34 into the contest as he hauled in a 37-yard pass from JR Martin. With 5:01 remaining in the first, Jon Gullette broke off a 56-yard run for the touchdown, doubling the Lions' lead.
Beau DeBerry, with 10:32 to play in the half, was on the receiving end of a 15-yard touchdown pass from Martin to put the Lions up by three scores.
The Lions outgained Newberry 317-207 with 199 yards on the ground. The Lion defense was stout, racking up seven sacks in the contest.
Martin threw for 121 yards and two scores while rushing for 50 yards. Gullette led the Lions with 108 yards on the ground. Mitchell led all receivers with 73 yards on three catches.
Landon Honeycutt led all players with 11 tackles and added 1.5 sacks on the day. Damipi Lamboni led all players with three sacks.
