Mars Hill puts up season-high 49, downs UVA Wise
The Mars Hill football team (7-1, 6-1 SAC) defeated UVA Wise (2-7, 1-6 SAC) by a score of 49-24 Saturday afternoon inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill football team (7-1, 6-1 SAC) defeated UVA Wise (2-7, 1-6 SAC) by a score of 49-24 Saturday afternoon inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
The Lions held UVA Wise scoreless for the first half of play, entering the half up 35-0. Jon Gullette's 20-yard touchdown reception with under three minutes to play in the first opened the scoring.
Mars Hill put up four touchdowns in the second quarter. JR Martin ran for three scores; two one-yard scampers and a 33-yard rush. To put the Lions up 21-0 with under nine minutes to play, a forced fumble off of the sack from Landon Honeycutt was scooped up by Dexter Fitzpatrick and returned 57 yards for the score.
The teams traded scores in the third with the Lions outscoring UVA Wise 14-10. Gullette put the Lions up 42-0 just 2:58 into the half with a three-yard rush. With 5:04 to play in the quarter, he caught his second touchdown pass of the day, a 60-yard strike from Martin, putting the Lions up 49-7.
UVA Wise scored 17 unanswered to close out the game, but the Lions' large lead held firm en route to their fourth straight win.
Martin went 10-of-14 for 252 yards and two scores. He rushed for 77 more yards and three scores. Gullette led the Lions with 106 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Honeycutt led all players with 17 tackles, adding one sack, and a forced fumble. Fitzpatrick ended the contest with eight tackles. Damipi Lamboni led all players with four tackles for loss including three sacks.
The Lions battle Tusculum in a crucial South Atlantic Conference Mountain Division clash on Saturday, November 4 on the road. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
