Lions cruise past Montreat

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's lacrosse team (3-9) defeated Montreat (1-6) by a score of 19-6 Wednesday night.
The Lions dominated play in the first quarter, holding Montreat scoreless and striking four times. Zack Gardner-McMinn netted two goals while Josh McCallion and George Yanssens potted the other two Mars Hill goals.
Mars Hill started the second off on a five-goal run with Brandon Woodward striking twice in the run. Bo Bitzer, Trevor Kennedy, and Zack Berg each added goals during the stretch. Montreat's Ben Stephenson broke the first half shutout with under three minutes to play. Two seconds before the buzzer sounded, Kennedy netted his second of the quarter, sending Mars Hill into the half with a 10-1 lead.
The Lions continued to roll, opening the third on a 9-0 run. Woodward started the scoring off just 39 seconds in, completing his hat-trick. Both Berg and Ryan Shehan tallied two goals while Andrew Dafoe, Paxton Workman, and Marius Robinson each netted one.
Montreat scored the final goal of the third and held Mars Hill scoreless in the final 15 minutes of play with Stephenson scoring four of the five goals. He led all players with five points (5g).
Berg led the Lions with four goals while Woodward (3g, 1a) and Kennedy (2g, 2a) each added four points. Workman was a perfect 8-for-8 from the faceoff circle while Kennedy led the team with six groundballs.
Steven Smith made four saves in 30 minutes for the win while Shane Hecht added four saves in the third. Alex Oleschuk made two saves in the fourth quarter.
Mars Hill returns to South Atlantic Conference action on Saturday, April 1 when they host Newberry. The contest is slated for a 1 p.m. start inside Meares Stadium.
