Ortiz places fifth in 500 yard freestyle, Lions sit in sixth
Erwin Ortiz’s fifth place finish in the 500 yard freestyle was the highlight of the Mars Hill men’s swim team’s action in day two of the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Erwin Ortiz's fifth place finish in the 500 yard freestyle was the highlight of the Mars Hill men's swim team's action on day two of the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships.
Ortiz swam a time of 4:35.08 for the top five result. The time meets the national cut, which currently sits at 4:35.46. Matt Walker and Jake Moore also swam in the event, finishing 12th and 24th, respectively.
In the bonus final of the 50 yard freestyle, Vitor Goncalves placed first out of the eight competitors.
The group of Ortiz, Goncalves, Brendan Cyprianos and Elijah Sears finished eighth in the 400 yard medley relay, recording a time of 3:28.55.
The Lions slid from fourth to sixth after day two action with a total of 220 points. The Lions trail Catawba by 23 points and lead Lenoir-Rhyne by 10 points.
Day three action kicks off Friday morning with the championships concluding on Saturday.
