Mars Hill pulls away late in win over Montreat
The Mars Hill women's lacrosse team (2-4) defeated Montreat (0-4) by a score of 18-11 Wednesday night inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's lacrosse team (2-4) defeated Montreat (0-4) by a score of 18-11 Wednesday night inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
Leading 10-9 entering the final frame, Mars Hill scored eight goals in the fourth to secure their second win of the year. Neveah Louden and Haley Stallings each scored twice in the frame while Madison Welch, Ashley Lindsay, Chandler Werner, and Samantha Newton also struck for the Lions.
Werner opened the scoring in the first, just 1:37 into the contest. Montreat answered with four straight goals from Kate Gauntlett. Mars Hill roared back to score four of the final five goals in the first as Newton netted two while Welch and Werner each scored.
The Lions outscored Montreat 3-1 in the second to go into the half up 8-6. Stallings, Newton, and Werner each tallied goals for Mars Hill.
Despite allowing the first two goals of the third, Montreat ended the quarter on a 3-0 run as Hannah Jarboe scored twice. Madison Terrell netted the third Cavalier goal.
Gauntlett led all players with seven points (5g, 2a).
The trio of Werner, Stallings, and Newton each scored four goals. Newton added an assist to lead the team with five points. Louden ended the night with four points (3g, 1a) while Welch concluded the contest with three (2g, 1a).
Welch, Lindsay, and Werner led the Lions with six draw controls apiece while Lindsay led all field players with five groundballs. Lauren Bryner made eight saves in the win.
The Lions host Lincoln Memorial in a return to South Atlantic Conference play on Wednesday, March 6. First draw is set for 4 p.m.
