Volleyball Unable to Ground Eagles
The Mars Hill volleyball team lost to Carson-Newman 3-1 on Tuesday night in Holt Fieldhouse.
JEFFERSON CITY, TENN.- The Mars Hill volleyball team lost to Carson-Newman 3-1 on Tuesday night in Holt Fieldhouse. The Lions fall to 2-9 overall and 1-3 in the South Atlantic Conference while Carson-Newman improves to 8-3 and 4-0 in league play.
Rebecca Butler led the Lions with 13 kills and a match-high 24 digs. Mary Kate Griffin had nine kills and seven digs along with two service aces. Lauren Hochstetler had eight kills and 15 digs.
Rachel Harper had 14 kills and 15 digs to lead the Eagle attack. Sara Fairley had a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs. Jenna Wilson contributed 13 kills and two digs. Taylor Lowe had a match-high 26 digs.
Carson-Newman took an 8-4 lead in the opening set before the Lions rallied to the score at 11 following a Harper error. The Eagles answered with a 5-0 run, taking a 16-11 lead. Mars Hill pulled to within three, 19-16, before the Eagles closed out the set with a 25-18 victory.
Mars Hill tied the match at one after a 25-14 win in a second set in which they never trailed. Griffin began the set with a kill before the Eagles tied the score at two. The teams traded points before the Lions went on a 9-1 run to lead 13-4 and take control of the set. Carson-Newman would cut the lead to six, 17-11 but got no closer as Mars Hill went on an 8-3 run to close out the set.
An Eagle attack error and a Griffin kill put the Lions ahead 2-0 in set three before Carson-Newman scored six straight points. Mars Hill would pull to within three, 19-16, following a Devon Felts kill but Carson-Newman scored four of the next five points to close out the set with a 25-18 win.
Trailing by two to start the fourth set, Mars Hill pulled out to a 7-4 lead following a Hochstetler kill. The Eagles tied the score at 8 before Mars Hill reclaimed the lead. Neither team enjoyed more than a three point advantage before a Butler kill tied the set at 20. Carson-Newman finished off the set and the match with a 5-0 run for a 25-20 win. The final set featured 18 ties and nine lead changes.
After playing their first 11 matches of 2014 on the road, the Lions begin the home portion of their 2014 slate on Friday night against Catawba at 7 p.m.
