Volleyball Defeats Catawba in Home Opener
The Mars Hill volleyball team earned a 3-1 win in their 2014 home opener on Friday night over Catawba in Stanford Arena, winning by scores of 25-23, 21-25, 25-22 and 25-20.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill volleyball team earned a 3-1 win in their 2014 home opener on Friday night over Catawba in Stanford Arena, winning by scores of 25-23, 21-25, 25-22 and 25-20. Mars Hill improves to 3-9 overall and 2-3 in South Atlantic Conference play while Catawba drops to 3-7 and 1-4 in league action. Friday night's win is also the first match Mars Hill has won in four sets; the Lions entered play with an 0-5 mark in matches that were decided by a 3-1 score.
Freshmen Rebecca Butler and Lauren Hochstetler led the Lion attack, contributing 15 and 14 kills respectively. Mary Kate Griffin also finished in double-digits with 12 kills. Sara Fahrenbrook handed out a season-high 46 assists. Butler had two aces, with Hochstetler, Christen Nicholson and Victoria Kaiser recording an ace. Defensively, Butler and Nicholson each had 16 digs. Hochstetler had 13 digs with Griffin posting 12 digs for a double-double.
Catawba was led by Bri Howard's 10 kills, while Rachel Gallup finished with nine kills. Kaytee Frabotta led the Lady Indians with 20 assists with Rachel Stanford ending the night four assists behind Frabotta. On defense, Taylor Houser led Catawba with 19 digs. McKenzie Garrison and Evan Schultz had 13 digs each.
Mars Hill continues South Atlantic Conference play tomorrow afternoon, welcoming Queens to Stanford Arena at 5 p.m.
