Volleyball to Face Carson-Newman in SAC Tournament Quarterfinal
The Mars Hill volleyball team has earned the seventh seed for the South Atlantic Conference Tournament and will play Carson-Newman on Friday at 5 p.m.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill volleyball team has earned the seventh seed for the South Atlantic Conference Tournament for the third consecutive season. This year, Mars Hill will play second-seeded Carson-Newman in the quarterfinals tomorrow in Hickory, N.C. Mars Hill finished the regular season with a 10-19 overall record and a 9-13 league mark.
The Eagles won both meetings this season, prevailing 3-1 in Jefferson City, Tenn. on September 23 and a 3-2 victory in Stanford Arena on October 14. The Lions and Eagles last met in the conference tournament in 2004, with Mars Hill holding a 4-3 advantage in postseason matches.
The conference announced its postseason awards yesterday with two Lions claiming league honors. Sophomore Mary Kate Griffin earned Second Team All-SAC accolades, with freshman Rebecca Butler claiming an All-Freshman team position. Griffin was the league leader in service aces (58) and solo blocks (21), with Butler finishing as the top freshman in kills, kills per set, total attacks, digs and digs per set.
The winner of the Carson-Newman/Mars Hill match will face the victor of the Anderson/Lincoln Memorial match on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Wingate University earned the top seed and will face eighth-seeded Newberry at Noon on Friday, with Lenoir-Rhyne and Tusculum squaring off at 2:30 p.m.
