HARROGATE, TENN. – The Mars Hill volleyball team dropped a South Atlantic Conference match to Lincoln Memorial on Tuesday, September 20. The Lions fall to 1-7 overall and 0-5 in the league after dropping sets by the score of 13-25, 10-25, 27-25 and 12-25. LMU is now 8-1 overall and 5-0 within the SAC.
Rebecca Butler, Elizabeth Kaesar, Brooks Green, and Lauren Hochstetler led the Lions with five kills each, while Sally Anne Johnson and Maddie Spurgeon added four apiece. Sara Fahrenbrook provided 16 assists and 13 digs.
The Railsplitters made an early run, racing out to a quick 5-1 lead in the opening set. That lead ballooned to 17-7 before the Lions made a mini run of 5-2 to narrow the gap to 19-12. However, that would be as close as they would get as LMU took set one 25-13.
After Mars Hill took a 2-1 lead in set two, Lincoln Memorial used a 7-1 spurt to gain control at 8-3, forcing a quick timeout by the Lions. The brief hiatus did nothing for momentum with LMU collecting the first five points coming out to expand its lead to double-digits at 13-3. The Railsplitters eventually took the set 25-10 to go up 2-0 in the match.
Set three had a different feel to it as the two teams battled out to 25-25 deadlock, including 10 ties and four lead changes. With the set locked at 25, Mars Hill showed just how resilient it could be, taking the next two points, capped off by Butler's service ace, to send the match to a pivotal fourth set.
Lincoln Memorial doubled-up the Lions, 8-4, in the early stages of set four. That four point lead would extend to double-digits at 21-11. From that point the Railsplitters ultimately closed out the match with a 25-12 set win.
The Lions will be back in action on Friday, September 2, traveling to Salisbury, N.C. to take on conference for Catawba. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
