MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill women's volleyball team collected a 3-0 sweep of Carson-Newman on Tuesday night inside Chambers Gymnasium. A total team effort guided the Lions to set score of 25-15, 25-13, and 25-19, improving their record to 7-18 overall and 6-12 in the league. Carson-Newman dropped to 3-23 overall and 2-16 in the conference.
Lauren Hochstetler and Mary Kate Griffin led the charge offensively for the Lions with nine kills each, while Sara Fahrenbrook and Andie Russell dished out 14 assists each. Victoria Kaiser anchored the defense with 18 digs, while Hochstetler chipped in 13.
Mars Hill set the tone for the match early in set one, cruising to a 12-6 lead following a service ace from Russell. The Eagles reeled off three straight after a timeout, but an emphatic kill by Griffin put a stop to the mini run and swung the momentum in the Lions half of the court once again. With the score at 13-9, MHU doubled-up (12-6) the Eagles to capture set one 25-15.
An early barrage of ties in set two turned into another big run by the Lions. The score was dead even at three when a kill by Hochstetler fueled a massive 13-4 run to put the Blue and Gold in the driver's seat. That lead ballooned to 20-9, eventually ending 25-13 in favor of the Lions.
Carson-Newman held an early 5-3 advantage in the third frame, but from that point there would be a total of four ties ensuing. With the score knotted at 11-all, Mars Hill ran off 10 of the next 12 points to take a commanding 21-13 advantage. Although the Eagles cut the deficit to 23-18, the gap was too large to overcome, dropping set three 25-19.
The Lions will continue their three-game home stand on Friday, November 4 as they play host to the Wolves of Newberry. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
