Lions Dominate With Sweep of Coker

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill volleyball broke out the brooms in a 3-0 sweep of Coker on Saturday, October 08, 2016. The Lions fired on all cylinders throughout the match, winning all three sets by scores of 25-19, 25-19, and 28-26 to improve to 3-11 overall and 2-9 in the SAC. The Cobras fell to 9-8 overall and 3-8 in the league.
Rebecca Butler tallied a game-high 11 kills to lead the Lions, while Andie Russell fueled the offense with 23 dimes. Victoria Kaiser and Mary Kate Griffin anchored the defense with 22 and 18 digs, respectively. Lauren Hochstetler chipped in nine kills and seven digs, while Sally Anne Johnson controlled the net with five block assists.
Griffin started set one with a service ace and the Lions never looked back, dominating the Cobras the entire way and cruising to a 25-19 set win. Set two was back-and-forth for the majority of the frame, but Mars Hill took a 17-all game and ripped off an 8-2 run to take the set 25-19 and a commanding 2-0 match lead.
Coker looked poised to send the match to a fourth set, jumping out to a comfortable 20-14 lead, forcing a timeout from the Lions. Mars Hill used the stoppage to regain composure as it used a massive 8-0 run coming out of the break to take a 22-20 lead late. From that point the set would see four ties and three lead changes. With the score tied at 26-26, Mars Hill benefited from two consecutive attack errors from the Cobras to escape with a 28-26 set win.
Alexis Berles and Taylor du Bray led the Cobras with seven kills each, while Christen Bragg dished out 18 assists. Kara Overholt compiled a game-high 25 digs.
The Lions will return to action on Friday, October 14 as they head to Greeneville, Tenn. to take part in the two-day PBC/SAC Crossover. Day one of action will have Mars Hill facing USC Aiken at 12:00 p.m. before taking on Georgia College in the nightcap at 4:00 p.m.
