Lions Swept By Wingate

WINGATE, N.C. – The Mars Hill volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Wingate on Friday night. The Lions came up on the wrong end of a closely contested contest as they dropped all three sets by scores of 27-25, 25-18, and 28-26, falling to 7-21 overall and 6-15 in the league, while the Bulldogs improved to 25-5 overall and 17-4 within the conference.
The first set was anyone's frame as the two teams battled back-and-forth to the tune of 14 ties and eight lead changes. Mars Hill led 25-24 late, but three straight points by WU gave the Bulldogs the set 27-25.
Set two had a different feel as Wingate took control early, running out to a comfortable 11-6 lead and eventually taking a commanding 2-0 match lead with a 25-18 set win. The third set mirrored the first with 15 ties and seven lead changes. With the score knotted at 26-all, Wingate collected the final two points to end the match with a 28-26 third set win.
Mary Kate Griffin led the Lions with team-highs of eight kills and 15 digs, while Andie Russell provided 23 assists and 11 digs. Victoria Kaiser and Lauren Hochstetler each chipped in 11 digs.
The Lions will close out the regular season tomorrow afternoon, traveling to Hartsville, S.C. to take on Coker. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
