Lions Fall at Queens

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Mars Hill volleyball fell in three sets to Queens (N.C.) on Saturday, October 29 at Curry Arena. The Royals improved to 15-5 overall and 12-3 in the league after collecting set wins of 25-16, 25-19, and 25-21, while the Lions lost their third straight contest, falling to 6-18 overall and 5-11 within the league.
For the second consecutive day Mary Kate Griffin paced the Lions offense with a game-high 11 kills, while Rebecca Butler added nine. Sara Fahrenbrook dished out 26 assists and Victoria Kaiser finished with a team-high 13 digs.
After falling behind 2-1 in the opening set, Queens used a 15-5 burst to gain the lead and all the momentum, eventually taking the frame 25-16.
Mars Hill was the aggressor early in set two, running off a lead of 10-7 following a block by Butler and Fahrenbrook. However, the Royals once again took control of the set, this time with a run of 12-5 to capture a 19-15 lead late. Queens tallied six of the next 10 points to take a commanding 2-0 match lead.
The Lions looked primed to extend the game in the third set, reeling off a 17-14 lead halfway through the frame, forcing a timeout by Queens. Coming out of the break QU went on a 7-1 run to push ahead 21-18 before ultimately taking the set 25-21 and the match 3-0.
Mars Hill will return to action on Tuesday, November 1 it plays host to the Eagles of Carson-Newman. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
