A recap of MHU athletics from the week that was.
Athletic Highlights: September 9 – September 15
Men's Soccer: The Lions went 1-0-1 this past week, drawing 1-1 versus Lees-McRae, but putting up a dominant 7-2 victory on the schedule over Newberry to open SAC play. Peter Plougmand tied the school record for the second time in his career with four goals versus the Wolves. He was named SAC WePlayed Sports Offensive Player of the Week for the second straight week. He currently tops DII in goals (7) and points (15). Mars Hill hosts Southern Wesleyan on Wednesday, September 18 before taking to the road Saturday afternoon to face Anderson in SAC action.
Women's Soccer: Mars Hill drew with Newberry on the road Saturday, 0-0. Carla Humera led the team with four shots while Camryn Miller collected her second shutout of the season. The Lions hosted Saint Leo Monday, September 16, falling by a score of 2-0. They return to action on Friday, September 20 when they take on Anderson on the road. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Volleyball: Mars Hill split the week, falling to Converse in five sets in their home opener, but sweeping Emory & Henry on the road Saturday afternoon to open South Atlantic Conference play. Laela Jimenez set a new career-high with 50 digs in the match versus Converse while Skylar Ogden knocked down a team-high 10 kills in the win over the Wasps. Mars Hill hosts Lincoln Memorial on Tuesday, September 17 at 6 p.m. They then face both Lenoir-Rhyne and UNC Pembroke on the road on Saturday, September 21 at 1 and 4 p.m. respectively.
Men's Golf: The Lions opened their fall season at the Lindsey Wilson College Fall Classic, placing ninth. They play in the Fincastle Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday of this week.
Women's Golf: The Lions opened their fall season at the Lindsey Wilson College Fall Classic, placing second. Payton Balliet placed fifth overall. They play in the Fincastle Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday of this week.
Men's Cross Country: Among DII teams, Mars Hill placed second at the Fire Tower Project, ran in Boone, N.C. The Lions were led by freshman Sean Sanchez, who turned in a time of 26:46. The time is good for 18th on the Mars Hill Top 25 Freshman Record Board.
Women's Cross Country: Among DII teams, Mars Hill placed second at the Fire Tower Project, ran in Boone, N.C. The Lions were led for the second straight race by freshman Sophie Ratcliff. Her time of 22:44 in the 6K race puts her second all-time in the MHU women's cross country record books.
Football: The Lions return to action on Saturday, September 21 when they open South Atlantic Conference play versus Lenoir-Rhyne. Kickoff inside Meares Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
