The Mars Hill football team opened their 2022 campaign on the road, falling to No. 11 East Tennessee State University by a score of 44-7.
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Mars Hill football team opened their 2022 campaign on the road, falling to No. 11 East Tennessee State University by a score of 44-7.
The Buccaneers jumped out to a 20-0 lead after the first quarter of play and tacked on two more scores in the second quarter. Jacob Saylors led all players with 55 yards on the ground and two touchdowns in the first half while Tyler Riddell threw for 142 yards and two touchdowns, going 10-of-13 in the air.
Jervon Newton led the Lions with 15 yards on the ground in the first half while Malik Laurent hauled in three passes for a team-high 30 yards.
Ty Snelson broke the shutout bid as he was on the receiving end of a five-yard pass from Jimmy Urzua later in the third quarter for the Lions first touchdown of the season.
The Buccaneers racked up 304 yards of offense to the Lions 262 while both teams each collected 16 first downs. The Lions, with the duo of Urzua and Brody Whitson netted 244 yards in the air.
Laurent led the Lions with four receptions for 59 yards. Landon Honeycutt led the Lions with 5.5 tackles on the night with three for loss including one sack.
Mars Hill returns to the field on Saturday, September 17 when they host Catawba in their home and South Atlantic Conference opener. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
