
Lions fall to Saints under the lights

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill football team (2-2, 2-1 SAC) was defeated by Limestone (4-1, 3-0 SAC) by a score of 17-14 Thursday night in Meares Stadium.
A scoreless first half saw a defensive battle between the two squads with only 99 yards combined. Both teams forced two turnovers apiece with one interception and one fumble per side. Tristan Rankin reeled in the interception for Mars Hill while Boris Lewis recovered the fumble caused by Octaveus Askew.
The Saints broke through in the second quarter to take a 7-0 lead into the half. Tre Stewart scored the lone touchdown of the half on a 23-yard run with 2:25 left in the half.
Limestone recorded 166 yards of offense to Mars Hill's 88 in the first 30 minutes of play.
Dustin Noller connected with Jelani Baker on a 61-yard pass play with 10:42 remaining in the third quarter. Mars Hill's Ty Snelson cut the deficit in half, reeling in a seven-yard pass from Jimmy Urzua with 6:11 left in the third frame.
The Lions tied it up early in the fourth, eight seconds in, as Ja'Hari Mitchell caught a 23-yard pass from Urzua for his first of the season.
With less than nine minutes to play, Austin Kemp put the Saints ahead for good with a 28-yard field goal.
Limestone outgained the Lions 348-322, leading with 254 yards in the air.
Urzua threw for 193 yards and two scores. Jervon Newton led the Lions with 65 yards on the ground while Snelson led the Lions with 52 receiving yards.
The duo of Landon Honeycutt and Octaveus Askew recorded 11 tackles and one sack. Askew and Jabril Norman each forced a fumble on the night.
The Lions take on Erskine on Saturday, October 8 on the road at 4 p.m.
