Lions Fall in Season-Opener
GAFFNEY, S.C.-- The Mars Hill women's basketball team was defeated 84-54 by Limestone in the Lions' season-opener at the Timken Center Friday night.
The Saints opened the game on a 17-2 run and never trailed. Limestone was paced by Maria Young with 25 points on 10-of-19 shooting. Tia Williams and Alicia Brookins added 15 points apiece. Mars Hill was paced by Armeka Booker with 14 points and five rebounds. The Lions fall to 0-1 on the season. Limestone opens the season 1-0.
Brookins notched a double-double with 10 rebounds to go along with her 15 points. Limestone shot 42.2 percent on 30-of-71 shooting on the game. The Saints outscored the Lions 40-20 in the paint and scored 36 points off turnovers.
Kristen Metcalf added 12 points for Mars Hill, while Autumn Ward chipped in with 11. Erica Warren added seven points and a team-high seven rebounds for MHC. The Lions shot 32.6 percent from the field (15-of-46).
After falling behind 17-2 early, MHC went on a 13-0 run to pull within two points at the second media timeout. A pair of threes by Ward, four points from Booker, a bucket by Warren and a free throw by Briana Bonaparte sparked the run.
A 21-11 surge by the Saints pushed the lead to 12 at the break. A 12-2 run in the opening minutes of the second half put the game out of reach. Brookins scored seven points in the run for Limestone. The run ended with the Saints holding a 50-28 lead.
Mars Hill will travel to Winston-Salem for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off with the Rams on Monday, Nov. 12.
