Pair of Lions Named All-Conference
ROCK HILL, S.C.- The South Atlantic Conference Women's Basketball All-Conference Teams were announced Wednesday, with two Lions earning recognition.
ROCK HILL, S.C.- The South Atlantic Conference Women's Basketball All-Conference Teams were announced Wednesday, with two Lions earning recognition.
Sophomore Armeka Booker was named to the All-SAC Second Team, while Kelsey Espinosa was named to the All-SAC Freshman Team. This is Booker's second consecutive appearance on the All-SAC Team after earning All-Freshman honors last season, while Espinosa picked up the first All-SAC honor of her career. Mars Hill concluded their first season under head coach Sarah Jansen 7-19 overall and 4-14 in conference play. The Lions won two of their last three to finish the season strong.
Booker finished fourth in the conference in scoring average, pouring in 14.5 points per game. The sophomore shot 48 percent from the field and added 7.8 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per contest. Booker notched five double-doubles on the season and had two streaks where she scored in double-figures in nine consecutive games. She topped 20 points four times and scored a season-high 25 points Jan. 5 at Newberry.
Espinosa led all Lion freshman with 6.2 points per game and 6.3 rebounds per contest. She also added 1.5 assists per game, best among Mars Hill post players. The freshman scored a career-high 22 points Feb. 23 to help the Lions defeat Tusculum. She finished the season on a high note, averaging 13.3 points and seven rebounds over the final three contests.
Anderson guard Alissa Diaz was named the SAC Women's Basketball Player of the Year. Diaz ranked second in the conference in scoring at 16.8 points per game. Trojan head coach Jim Brunelli picked up Coach of the Year honors for guiding AU to a first-place finish in the conference.
Tuccoa Brackett of Brevard was named SAC Women's Basketball Freshman of the Year after averaging 15.2 points per game- third in the conference.
