Marcey, Tazzetta lead Lions past Bobcats

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's lacrosse team (3-2) defeated Lees-McRae (1-2) in non-conference play by a score of 16-13 Saturday afternoon at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
The Lions jumped out to an early 6-1 lead with six different goal scorers in the first 7:40 of the contest. Alexa Tazzetta opened the scoring with her 10th of the season just 41 seconds into the game. Sydney Joyce picked up the assist and followed up less than three minutes later with her ninth on the year.
Mars Hill dominated throughout the first half, picking up 22 groundballs and forcing 17 Lees-McRae turnovers. The Lions went a perfect 3-for-3 from the free position with goals coming from the sticks of Tazzetta, Camryn Marcey, and Christina Fabrizio.
The Lions carried an 11-4 lead after 30 minutes of play as both Marcey and Tazzetta recorded two goals apiece.
Mars Hill built their lead up to as many as seven in the second half before the Bobcats began their comeback bid. Led by Makayla Willets' four goals, Lees-McRae struck for six straight goals, cutting the deficit to two goals with 2:28 remaining. Tazzetta's fourth of the game with less than a minute to play added another insurance marker for the Lions for their third win of the season.
Tazzetta and Marcey led the Lions with four goals apiece followed by Kiersten Foust's three on the afternoon. Fabrizio netted two goals and one assist for three points. Willets led all players with seven goals and seven points. Kalbie Grassett picked up a game-high 13 draw controls.
Gini Joy picked up the win for the Lions, making four saves on eight shots. In the second half of play, Alexa Holleran made 11 saves.
The Lions take to the road on Saturday, February 29 as they open South Atlantic Conference play versus Catawba. First draw is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
