Wolves pull away late, defeat Lions
The Mars Hill women's lacrosse team (1-3, 0-2 SAC) was defeated 22-17 by Newberry (1-2, 1-1 SAC) Saturday evening in South Atlantic Conference action.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's lacrosse team (1-3, 0-2 SAC) was defeated 22-17 by Newberry (1-2, 1-1 SAC) Saturday evening in South Atlantic Conference action.
Tied at 10 after the first half, Newberry broke the tie off of a Kelly Martin tally with 24:15 remaining. The Lions answered with two goals from the sticks of Sydney Joyce and Maria Fabrizio to go up 12-11.
The Wolves rallied to score six straight as Sophie Moore netted four in the span. Kiersten Foust's free position marker with 8:45 remaining broke the Wolves' streak momentarily before they added another 4-0 run, taking a 21-13 lead with just over five minutes to play.
Mars Hill netted four of the last five goals of the contest, including two Foust tallies.
The teams traded goals in the first half, tied at three with 22:14 left in the half. Newberry went on a 3-0 run, but the Lions responded by scoring four of the next five goals to tie the game at seven with under 10 minutes remaining in the first.
Mars Hill was leading 10-9 in the waning seconds, but a Chloe Wood marker knotted the game at 10 moments before the buzzer sounded.
Moore led all players with nine goals followed by Wood's six points (5g, 1a). Marissa Plumer picked up a game-high nine draw controls.
Foust led the Lions with five goals and one assist. Alexa Tazzetta recorded five points (4g, 1a) while Fabrizio (3g, 1a) and Joyce (4g) added four apiece.
The Lions return to action on Wednesday, March 10 when they host Lincoln Memorial in their fifth straight home game. Draw control is set for 4 p.m
