HARROGATE, Tenn. – Mars Hill's baseball team lost a double-header to Lincoln Memorial at Hennon Field on Saturday afternoon. The Lions fell to 21-26-1 overall and 10-17 in the conference. The Railsplitters improved to 31-18 on the year, 15-12 in the SAC.
Game 1: LMU 13. MHU 3
Christian Stampler, Lance Edwards and Daniel Vitello posted two hits apiece to lead the Lion at the plate in the first contest. Stampler added a homerun while Vitello hit a double. Zac Brown suffered the loss (4-3) on the mound for the Lions.
Mason Ewers led LMU going 2-for-4 with two homeruns and five RBI. Seth Hunt went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI. Joe Bobiak picked up the win (7-1) on the mound throwing five innings allowing three runs on six hits.
LMU scored three runs in both the second and third innings to lead 6-0 before Mars Hill finally got on the board in the fifth inning when they scored two runs on the same number of hits. Vitello had a RBI double in the at-bat and Cody Cline scored Gray McCurry on a fielder's choice.
Stampler hit a solo homerun in the sixth inning to cut the Lions' deficit to 6-3 but that was as close as the Lions would get. LMU scored seven more runs over the next three innings to secure a 13-3 victory.
Game 2: LMU 5, MHU 4 (8 innings)
Stampler went 1-for-4 in game two with a homerun and two RBI while Matt Honeycutt was 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBI to lead the Lions offensively in the nightcap. Bryson Bailey suffered the loss (5-2) on the mound for the Lions pitching 2.2 innings in relief.
Hunt had a triple and two-RBI to pace LMU at the plate. Matt Mullenbach threw a complete game allowing six hits and four runs while striking out 14 batters to obtain his sixth win (6-2) on the season.
After three scoreless innings, Stampler hit a two-run homerun in the top of the fourth inning to give MHU a 2-0 lead. LMU added a single run in the bottom half of the fourth frame before Vitello hit a solo homerun to left field in the top of the fifth inning to extend the Lions' advantage to 3-1. LMU took the lead in the bottom half of the fifth inning scoring three runs on the same number of hits highlighted by two-RBI triple from Hunt.
Honeycutt scored on a fielder's choice in the sixth inning to knot the game at 4-all and after a scoreless seventh inning, the contest was sent into extra inning play.
Mars Hill could not muster a run in the top of the eighth inning. The Railsplitters were able to push the winning run across in the bottom of the eighth inning after Timmy Wages singled through the left side to drive in Tyler Adams for the game wining score.
