Mars Hill downed by Concordia-St. Paul
The Mars Hill women's lacrosse team was felled by Concordia-St. Paul, 18-3, Wednesday afternoon at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's lacrosse team was felled by Concordia-St. Paul, 18-3, Wednesday afternoon at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
In a first half dominated by the Golden Bears, Mars Hill's offense was kept at bay, only scoring once in the first 30 minutes. Concordia-St. Paul dominated Mars Hill in possession and shots, putting 31 shots towards the net compared to the Lions' four. Alexandria Holleran made 16 first half saves. Concordia-St. Paul scored the first five goals of the half with five different players. Raelyn Korinek scored 39 seconds into the contest for her fourth of the season. In the next 7:23, goals by Kailey Heinl, Maddie Hentges, Margot Coomes and Lexi Dahl put the Golden Bears up 5-0 just over eight minutes in the contest.
Olivia Hokanson, who scored two of the Lions' three goals, snapped the scoring streak by the Golden Bears with 20:29 left in the half on a free position. Just over two minutes later, Riley Burns' man-advantage goal began a six goal run to close out the half. Korinek scored three of the last five goals in the half. Kaci Reid and Kallie LaValle added the other markers to carry a 11-1 lead into the second half.
With the 10-goal advantage, the clock continued to run in the second half for Concordia-St. Paul as they outscored the Lions 7-2 in the final 30 minutes. Korinek's fifth goal of the contest opened the scoring 1:42 in the second half. The tally was her eighth of the year. Molly Tobias responded under five minutes later when a foul was called on Golden Bears' netminder, Claire Hagen. With the open net on a free position, Tobias scored the Lions' second goal of the afternoon. Burns, Heinl and Katie Moynihan scored in the next 8:12 of action to put Concordia-St. Paul up 15-2 with 13:21 left in the game.
Hokanson's 10th of the season was the last goal scored by the Lions on the afternoon with 10:36 remaining. Heinl collected her hat-trick goal with 4:43 left in the contest. Goals by Erica Peterson and Alina Boyce in the final three minutes gave the Golden Bears the 18-3 victory.
Korinek (5g) and Burns (2g, 3a) led all players with five points on the day. Heinl (3g), Boyce (1g, 2a) and Dahl (1g, 2a) each had three. Hokanson (2g) and Tobias (1g, 1a) had two apiece for the Lions.
Hagen made seven saves for her second win of the year. Holleran had 17 saves in the losing effort. Mars Hill falls to 1-2 while Concordia-St. Paul improves to 2-1.
The Lions travel to face Alabama-Huntsville in their first ever road game on Friday, March 9. The contest kicks off a three-game road trip for Mars Hill. Action is slated for a 5 p.m. start.
