Mars Hill downed by SAC leading Catawba
The Mars Hill (2-7, 0-4 SAC) women’s lacrosse team was defeated, 20-4, by the South Atlantic Conference leading Catawba Indians (9-5, 5-0 SAC) on the road Saturday afternoon.
SALISBURY, N.C. – The Mars Hill (2-7, 0-4 SAC) women's lacrosse team was defeated, 20-4, by the South Atlantic Conference leading Catawba Indians (9-5, 5-0 SAC) on the road Saturday afternoon.
Catawba opened the game scoring the first four goals in a span of 5:32. Gianna Pezzulo and Erin Green each had two goals. Olivia Hokanson interrupted the run momentarily with her 34th goal of the year at the 7:15 mark of the first half.
The Indians responded by scoring the next seven goals. In a span of 9:45, Brooklyn Tilley netted three goals for the hat-trick. Pezzulo collected her hat-trick marker with 11:07 remaining in the half. Katie Barth, Brooke Applebaum and Jillian Kurolvech also tallied for the Indians.
Hokanson once again put a stop to the streak with 7:06 left in the half. Catawba tacked on three more goals off the sticks of Tilley, Imani Grays and Nicole Hunt.
In a low scoring second half, Catawba scored six of the eight goals. Just over two minutes into the half, Erin Green scored her 30th of the season for the Indians. Hokanson answered with her 36th of the year to complete the hat-trick.
Catawba's Barth, Hunt and Kurolvech each picked up their second goals of the game in a span of 8:22 of the second half. Rebecca Dallman added the final goal for the Lions with 11:35 left in the contest, her fifth of the year. Two goals from the Indians in the final 6:25, including their 20th goal of the day scored with 11 seconds left by Pezzulo, secured their fifth conference victory of the year to remain atop the SAC.
Pezzulo (4g, 3a) led all players with seven points. Green (3g, 3a) finished with six. Hokanson led the Lions with her three goals on the afternoon. Madison Anselmo made four saves on six shots in the first half to pick up the win. Alexandria Holleran had six saves in the loss.
The Lions return to action on Wednesday, April 4th with a home contest versus Lenoir-Rhyne. Action is slated for a 4 p.m. start at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium.
