Lions win first SAC game in program history, down Newberry
The Mars Hill (3-11, 1-7 SAC) women's lacrosse team defeated Newberry (3-14, 1-7 SAC) by a score of 21-11 to win their first South Atlantic Conference contest in program history Saturday night.
NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Mars Hill (3-11, 1-7 SAC) women's lacrosse team defeated Newberry (3-14, 1-7 SAC) by a score of 21-11 to win their first South Atlantic Conference contest in program history Saturday night.
The win snapped a nine-game losing streak.
After giving up the first goal of the game just over two minutes in, the Lions roared back to score six straight goals and never looked back. Olivia Hokanson had three goals in that stretch. Molly Tobias, Scout Black and Victoria Eckard also collected goals to give Mars Hill the 6-1 lead with 13:30 left in the half. Sophie Moore would strike to cut the deficit to four, but two goals in the final 2:04 of the first half from Rebecca Dallman and Black gave Mars Hill an 8-2 lead at the half.
The second half saw a combined 22 goals, with Mars Hill outscoring the Wolves 13-9 in the final 30 minutes.
The Lions scored three of the first four goals in the half, including Tobias and Eckard's second of the game and Hokanson's fourth. Naomi Killian scored in between the Eckard and Hokanson markers. With 22:51 remaining and the Lions up 11-4, Hokanson would net her fifth of the game followed by Tobias' hat-trick goal. Newberry answered with two goals of their own from the sticks of Monique Proctor and Rachel Dillon.
Mars Hill would keep the lead to no less than seven goals for the remainder of the contest. At 15:38, Eckard's hat-trick tally kicked off a three-goal run for the Lions to give them an 11-goal lead with 12:36 remaining. Gabby Gianikos and Kiersten Foust scored the Mars Hill goals.
Moore would add two goals for the Wolves in the final 11 minutes along with Ohliger's second of the night. Black recorded her hat-trick marker at the 21:30 mark of the second half. With 19 seconds remaining in the game, Foust netted her third of the game to give Mars Hill the 10-goal victory over the Wolves.
Hokanson (7g) led all players with seven points. Eckard (3g, 3a) had six points on the night. Dillon led the Wolves offensively with three goals and two assists.
Alexandria Holleran made nine saves for her third win on the year. Brandy Bowman stopped five shots in the loss.
