Lions win last minute thriller over Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - Olivia Hokanson scored the game-winning goal with 12 seconds remaining in the contest to give the Mars Hill women's lacrosse team their second win of the season over Montevallo Sunday afternoon.
Montevallo tied the game with 29 seconds left off of a goal from Alyssa Kaminski. With overtime looming, Hokanson's ninth goal of the game gave the Lions the 15-14 win with a dozen seconds remaining.
The teams traded goals in the first 10 minutes until two straight goals from Hokanson and a free position goal from Kiersten Foust gave Mars Hill a 4-2 edge with 19:15 remaining in the first half. Jami Hudak cut the lead down to one before Hokanson reeled off three straight and was followed by a Foust tally to balloon the Lions' lead to 8-3 with 13:15 left in the first half.
The Falcons would score three of the next five goals to draw within four entering halftime. Hudak and Arianna Endelmann had two goals each for Montevallo. Hokanson scored seven goals in the first 30 minutes. Molly Tobias had one goal and two assists in the first half.
Montevallo dug into the Mars Hill lead at the start of the second half, scoring four of the first five goals. Hudak and Nicole Pahnke scored two apiece with Hudak assisting on the first Pahnke goal of the half.
Leading 11-10, Foust's third goal of the day reestablished the two goal lead, but Montevallo's persistence paid dividends when they tied the game at 13 with 6:24 left from Hudak's seventh of the game.
Hokanson proved clutch down the stretch, scoring the last two Lions' goals in the final 1:17 of the contest to escape with the 15-14 victory.
Hudak ended the game with eight points (7g, 1a) to lead all Falcons' players. Pahnke added five points (4g, 1a) followed by Janey Johnson's three assist effort.
Hokanson scored on nine of her ten shots on goal and won a team-high seven draw controls. Tobias had five points (3g, 2a) and picked up three groundballs.
Alexandria Holleran made 15 saves in the winning effort. Kay Tirrell allowed the final two goals on the only two shots she faced. Irfana Ahmed played 52 minutes, allowing 13 goals and making six saves.
The Lions improve to 2-3 while the Falcons fall to 4-5 on the season.
Mars Hill wraps up their three-game road trip with a contest against UVa-Wise on Wednesday, March 14. Action is slated for a 4 p.m. start time.
