Mars Hill dropped by Lenoir-Rhyne
The Mars Hill (2-8, 0-5 SAC) women's lacrosse team lost to Lenoir-Rhyne (5-7, 5-0 SAC), 16-4, at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium Wednesday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference play.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill (2-8, 0-5 SAC) women's lacrosse team lost to Lenoir-Rhyne (5-7, 5-0 SAC), 16-4, at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium Wednesday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference play.
Lenoir-Rhyne jumped out to a five goal lead in the first 6:34 of the game. Kaley Harris struck twice while Cathleen Gaffney had three assists in that span. Olivia Hokanson quelled the Bears' streak momentarily at the 9:10 mark. Less than a minute later, the Bears would reel off another four goals in a row, including two from Gabby Sousa. Victoria Eckard scored the Lions' second goal of the game with less than 10 minutes remaining in the opening half to pull within seven, but Lenoir-Rhyne responded once more with three straight goals to close out the opening 30 minutes.
Mars Hill trailed by 10 entering the second half. Mars Hill was outscored 4-2 in a low scoring second half. The Lions cut the deficit to nine with goals from Scout Black and Kiersten Foust with 13:23 left in the game. The Bears' Rachel Elmore scored two of the final three goals, both assisted by Gaffney, to secure the 16-4 victory.
Sousa (6g, 1a) led all players with seven points, followed by Gaffney's (5a) five. Elmore scored four times for the Bears. Hokanson, Eckard, Black and Foust were the goal scorers for the Lions. Molly Tobias earned an assist on the Hokason tally.
Ines Flueck made three saves in 40 minutes of play for the win. Alexandria Holleran stopped five shots in the loss.
The Lions return to action on Saturday, April 7 with a road contest versus Queens. The game is slated for a 5 p.m.
