Bowden, Urzua named SAC Players of the Week
Quarterback Jimmy Urzua and linebacker Nigel Bowden were named South Atlantic Conference Players of the Week with their performances in their 21-14 win over UVa-Wise.
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The South Atlantic Conference announced its AstroTurf Football Players of the Week for games played during week three of the 2019 season. Mars Hill quarterback Jimmy Urzua was tabbed as the Offensive Player of the Week, while fellow Lion linebacker Nigel Bowden was named the Defensive Player of the Week, and Wingate kicker McLean Robertson picked up Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Urzua, a sophomore from Braselton, Ga., led the Lions to a 21-14 win over UVa-Wise on Saturday to open up SAC play. He threw for a career-high 403 yards, with two touchdowns while averaging 9.8 yards per pass. In addition to his two passing touchdowns, Urzua also rushed for a touchdown. This is Urzua's first offensive player of the week award of the season.
Bowden, a senior from Macon, Ga., was the leader of the Lion defensive unit that held UVa-Wise to just 14 points. He recorded 11 total tackles, including six solo tackles, a half a sack and two tackles for loss. Bowden's 11 tackles were a a game and season high for the linebacker. This is Bowden's first defensive player of the week accolade of 2019.
Robertson, a junior from Lexington, S.C., scored 12 points for the No. 19 Bulldogs in their 30-28 win over Carson-Nemwan last week. He connected on three field goals, including a 43-yard game winner in the fourth quarter. He was also a perfect 3-for-3 on PATs. This is Robertson's second consecutive special teams player of the week award of the season.
