Lions sweep LMU in crucial SAC series
Blyth Freeman wins sixth in a row to take game one; Lions' bats come alive in game two.
HARROGATE, Tenn. - The Mars Hill softball team (19-17, 9-7 SAC) swept Lincoln Memorial (24-13, 8-6 SAC) on the road Saturday, taking game one by a score of 5-2 and game two in five innings by a score of 11-2.
GAME ONE: MHU 5, LMU 2
Mars Hill scored five unanswered runs to come from behind and take game one, 5-2.
Bri Weimer was the catalyst for the Lions' comeback in the top of the third, plating Camryn Sterling with a RBI single to left. Following a Railsplitters' error that allowed Sydney Hodges to score the tying run, Sara Rexrode's single to right center field plated Weimer for the go-ahead, and eventual, game-winning run.
Maia Sholter's two-run single in the top of the seventh insured the Lions' win.
Sterling and Hodges led all players with two hits apiece while Sholter led all players with two RBI.
Blyth Freeman threw the complet game, allowing two runs on six hits, striking out three for her sixth straight win.
GAME TWO: MHU 11, LMU 2 - 5 Innings
A six-run third inning propelled the Lions to the game two victory and series sweep.
After two home runs in first inning --a solo home run from Bri Weimer and a two-run blast by Maia Sholter--put the Lions up 3-0, Mars Hill added six in the top of the third.
Sara Rexrode opened the run with a solo home run to center. Sydney Hodges and Weimer each added RBI singles.
In the fourth, Leah Grimes plated Katie Todd to put the Lions up by 10. Sholter collected her third RBI of the game with a single up the middle, scoring Daci Sarver.
Grimes led all players going 3-for-3 from the plate while Weimer and Sholter led all players with three RBI apiece.
Téa Cornett earned her 11th win of the season, striking out five and allowing just two hits in three innings thrown. Rebekah Howard struck out two in two innings thrown to secure the win.
Mars Hill hosts No. 17 Tusculum on Tuesday, April 1 at Ponder Field. The doubleheader is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
