Lions defeated by Newberry on road
NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Mars Hill softball team (10-12, 1-3 SAC) was swept by Newberry (12-17, 2-2 SAC) by scores of 3-2 and 7-5 Saturday afternoon on the road.
GAME ONE: NBY 3, MHU 2
The Lions opened the scoring in the top of the first with a solo home run. Newberry, following a scoreless second inning, plated three runs to take the lead.
After scoreless fourth and fifth innings, the Lions pulled within one as Riley Waters drove home Daci Sarver with a single up the middle.
Grimes, Sarver, and Waters each recorded two hits in the contest. Téa Cornett threw a solid 6.0 innings, allowing just one hit on the day.
GAME TWO: NBY 7, MHU 5
Newberry completed the sweep with a 7-5 win in game two.
Trailing 1-0 entering the third, Maia Sholter's sacrifice fly plated Daci Sarver to tie the game at one. Later in the inning, Farley Park plated Leah Grimes with a single to left field.
The Wolves retook the lead in the third, capitalizing off of a Mars Hill error that scored two. They extended their lead to three, scoring two runs in the fourth.
Sholter hit her first home run of the game, a solo shot in the fifth to pull within two. In the top of the seventh, Sholter blasted a two-run shot for her second home run of the game and team-leading fourth RBI.
Both Sholter and Bri Weimer led the team with two hits apiece.
Mars Hill returns to the diamond on Wednesday, March 12 when they face Emory & Henry. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
