MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill softball team (10-10, 1-1 SAC) split their South Atlantic Conference opening series with Lenoir-Rhyne (12-10, 1-1 SAC), dropping game one by a score of 4-3, but taking game two by a score of 5-2.
GAME ONE: LR 4, MHU 3 - 8 Innings
The Bears came from behind to take game one in eight innings by a score of 4-3. Trailing by one in the top of the sixth, Lani Warren's solo shot tied the game at three. Warren struck again in the top of the eighth with a RBI single up the middle, plating the game-winning run.
The Lions led 1-0 after one off of Maia Sholter's RBI single to left, plating Bri Weimer. After the Bears scored two in the top of the fourth, Mars Hill responded with two of their own in the bottom part of the inning. With the bases loaded, Weimer singled up the middle, allowing Riley Waters and Brooke Hanson to score.
Weimer and Sholter led the Lions with two hits apiece while Weimer led the team with two RBI.
GAME TWO: MHU 5, LR 2
Mars Hill led 3-0 after five innings. Riley Waters' RBI single in the bottom of the second opened the scoring.
Lenoir-Rhyne's Alexandria Gray broke the shutout bid in the top of the sixth with a solo home run. Maia Sholter answered in the bottom of the frame, blasting a two-run home run to center field to secure the Lions' lead.
Sholter led the Lions with two RBI while Sholter and Brooke Hanson scored two runs apiece.
Blyth Freeman picked up the win, allowing just one hit in 5.0 innings. Téa Cornett threw two innings, securing the final six outs for the Lions' win.
