MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill (2-5, 0-2 SAC) women's lacrosse team was defeated by Lincoln Memorial (4-2, 1-1 SAC) 20-9 at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium Thursday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference play.
Leading 8-5 after the first half, the Railsplitters offense tripled up the Lions in the second half, 12-4. Opening the half with three straight goals from Amara Moss, Casey Kelly and Jacquelin Turner, Lincoln Memorial held an 11-5 lead before Olivia Hokanson's third goal of the game cut the deficit back down to five goals. Answering back with seven straight goals, the Railsplitters held an 18-6 lead with 13:48 remaining in the game. Kelly scored twice in the run along with goals from Moss, Erin DePaul, Zoe Zervos, Kennedy Buechner and Rachel Gardner.
The Lions scored three of the final five goals, two of which came off the stick of Hokanson, but the double-digit lead remained intact for the Railsplitters, picking up their first conference win of the season.
Just 17 seconds into the game, DePaul opened the scoring with her 11th goal of the season. Buechner doubled the lead just over a minute later. Hokanson brought the lead back down to one goal with her first of the game and 25th of the season. Gabby Gianikos, making her season debut, assisted on the goal. Moss and Buechner would add to the Railsplitters' lead to go up 4-1 just over six minutes into the contest.
Scout Black's free position goal and Rebecca Dallman's even strength tally, also assisted by Gianikos, pulled the Lions within two, but that would be the closest they would come for the rest of the contest. The Railsplitters scored four of the next six goals to go into the half up 8-5.
Shannon Novak stopped 14 shots to earn her fourth win of the season. Alexandria Holleran made five saves in defeat.
The Lions return to action on Saturday, March 24 for a conference tilt versus Coker. Seniors Adasia Bradshaw and Olivia Hokanson will be honored prior to the game for Senior Day. Play is set for an 11 a.m. start.
