Davis nets 23, Pioneers escape Lions' late charge

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill men's basketball team (2-16, 1-10 SAC) was narrowly defeated by Tusculum (8-10, 6-6 SAC) by a score of 73-72 Wednesday evening at home.
The Lions led Tusculum 41-34 after the first 20 minutes of play, hitting 54 percent of their shots from the floor. Kadyn Dawkins led all players with 16 points, adding four assists. Caleb Mauldin followed with nine points while Marvin Hires added six points and a team-high four rebounds.
Akeem Odusipe led Tusculum with eight points while Travis Pourciau netted seven and a team-high four rebounds.
In the second half, Tusculum used a 14-0 run late in the frame to come from behind and hold off the Lions in the waning seconds. The Pioneers went 6-of-11 from beyond the arc with Josiah Morris hitting all four attempts, leading the team with 12 points in the half. Jacob Hobbs added 11 in the final 20 minutes of play.
Kory Davis scored 19 of the Lions' 31 second half points while adding three rebounds. Dawkins had four points, three assists, rebounds, and steals in the half.
Davis led all players with 23 points followed by 20 from Dawkins. Dawkins led all players with seven assists. Derrick Molden, Jr. led the team with six rebounds.
Mars Hill plays game two of their three-game homestand on Saturday, February 3 when they host UVA Wise. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. inside Chambers Gymnasium.
