SAC Player of the Year Malcom Leads Yearly Awards
Mars Hill midfielder Anthony Malcom was voted the 2015 South Atlantic Conference Men’s Lacrosse Player of the Year
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Mars Hill midfielder Anthony Malcom was voted the 2015 South Atlantic Conference Men's Lacrosse Player of the Year, while Adam Wiedemann from Brevard was voted the League's Freshman of the Year. In addition, Coker mentor David Olliver was tabbed the Coach of the Year, the League announced today.
Malcom, a senior from New Westminster, B.C., currently ranks No. 10 in the nation with 1.91 assists per game and a shot percentage of .491. He also sits at No. 9 in Division II with 4.36 points per game, while his 2.45 goals per game is good for No. 34 in the country. The field general posted eight multi-assist games on the year, including a pair of seven assist games. Malcom scored a goal in 8-of-11 games on the year and came up big against Catawba on March 1 as he put in five goals and handed out a pair of assists to earn South Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors. As a team the Lions are ranked No. 7 in the nation with 7.45 assists per game, while ranking No. 11 in the nation with 20.45 points per game. Mars Hill is currently ranked No. 12 in the nation with 13 goals per game and is out-scoring its opponents by 3.45 goals per game to rank No. 16 in Division II.
Wiedemann, a midfielder from Brampton, Ontario, is currently No. 3 in the nation with 2.27 assists per game and is sixth in the country with 4.73 points per outing. A two-time South Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the Week selection this season, he scored a point in all but one of Brevard's 15 matches this season. Wiedemann posted seven multi-assist games, to go along with 11 multi-goal games. He posted seven assists on two occasions and scored six goals and dished out one assist against Queens on March 15.
Olliver turned around a squad that went 6-8 overall and 4-3 in SAC play a season ago. The Cobras claimed a share of the 2015 South Atlantic Conference Regular Season Championship and earned the No. 2 seed in the 2015 Conference Championship.
Jimmy McBride earned First-Team honors at attack. McBride has scored 28 goals with 16 assists in 11 games. Ned Kaish from Lenoir-Rhyne and Casey Hock of Queens joined McBride at First-Team attack. Queens' Evan Farkas and Josh Smith from Coker joined Malcom on the list of First-Team midfielders.
On the defensive side, Tim Cloud from Queens was named the First-Team long pole midfielder, while Stephen O'Hara from Lenoir-Rhyne, Dylan Marks of Coker, Patrick Thomas from Queens and Wingate's Drew Thompson were the First-Team defenders. Jack Grinewich from Mars Hill was tabbed the First-Team goalkeeper and Catawba's Daniel Rew was voted the First-Team specialist. Grinewich is fifth among NCAA Division II players with 13.40 saves per game.
Ryan Sage earned Second-Team honors at midfield. Sage leads the Lions with 31 goals and is second among NCAA Division II players with 3.44 points per game.
