SAAC Concludes Successful Canned Food Drive

MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill University Student Athlete Advisory Committee concluded its 2016 canned food drive at the annual Late Night Breakfast on Tuesday night.

The SAAC collected a grand total of 1,067 canned food items that were donated to Mars Hill Baptist Church for the backpack program. The SAAC president Anthony Farmer, as well as swimmer Mike Norman and Mars Hill Senior Woman Administrator Monica Gordy helped unload and organize all of the goods sent to the church on Tuesday evening.  

Of the teams that participated, women's basketball and men's and women's golf collected over 700 cans combined. The group was also able to raise approximately $75.00 in donations during the recent Mars Hill versus Wingate basketball game on Saturday, December 3.

The SAAC partners with Madison County and the backpack program every year to provide food to children on weekends while school is in session. Originally beginning in 2008, the program has went from six schools to all schools in the district.

"This week SAAC members went above and beyond to help our community members in need", said Gordy. Our week-long canned food drive was a huge success as all teams got involved and contributed. The SAAC has pledged to be more active on campus as well as in the community and they have been working hard at increasing their presence. We have excellent student-athlete leadership and communication."

Gordy and the SAAC will be back at it in the spring as they prepare for a Madison County night, as well as other events to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
