Athletic Highlights: March 22 – March 28, 2017
Baseball: Zac Brown (Albermarle, N.C.) threw 8.0 innings to defeat Newberry 4-2 Friday afternoon. He scattered five hits and allowed only one run. Fausto Turro (Wake Forest, N.C.) picked up the save against the Wolves. Devin Mangum (Asheville, N.C.) hit .600 over the weekend with a double and two RBI. Travis Owens (Toronto, Canada) hit .400 last week and had a 1.000 fielding percentage in 25 chances and was part of four defensive double-plays.
Men's Golf: Adam Lumley, a senior from Coventry, England, helped guide the Lions to an 8th-place finish at the Tusculum Invitational over the weekend. Lumley's 4-under 138 earned him a tie for first place individually and placed him on the All-Tournament team.
Lacrosse: Senior midfielder Alex Lipsky (Marietta, Ga.) scored three goals against nationally 11th-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne on Sunday, March 26. Lipsky leads the Blue and Gold with 17 goals on the season as well as a team-high 23 points.
Softball: Krista Romine (Concord, N.C.) had a very impressive week for the Lions softball team. After picking up a pair of RBI against Carson-Newman on Wednesday, March 22 she turned around and had a homerun and four RBI in a 9-0 win over Wingate this past Saturday.
Men's Tennis: The entire men's tennis team won in straight sets during a 9-0 rout of conference rival Brevard on Saturday, March 25. This was the first conference win on the season for the Lions.
Women's Tennis: The women's tennis team used a dominant performance from all members to defeat Brevard on Saturday, March 25, earning their first conference win on the year. The Lions did not drop a set during the entire match.
Men's Track & Field: Brandon Beard (Fairfield, Ohio) collected a new school record in the 800-meter race with a time of 1:56.56 and Noah Allison (Marshall, N.C.) had a personal record in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 8:53. Spencer Shade (Fairview, N.C.) had a personal-best in the pole vault at 13'10", while Cameron France (Mount Airy, N.C.) set new career-bests of 10.90 in the 100 meter and 22.13 in the 200 meter races. Marlon Allen (Orlando, Fla.) also set a personal record in the 200 meter with a time of 22.37.
Women's Track & Field: Shahnika Williams Auburn, N.Y.) recorded a new best in the 100 meter with a time of 12.98 as well as a personal record in the 200 meter with a time of 26.87. Jordan Bair (New Carlisle, Ohio) tied her personal best with a vault of 10'6". The women's 4x100 meter team of Christine Foresha (Brenerton, Wash.), Williams, Alyssa Deno (Miami, Fla.) and Sydney Britt (Terra Cei, Fla.) had an excellent time of 52.08.
