Attached are last week’s athletic highlights and this week’s upcoming schedule of events for Mars Hill University.
Athletic Highlights: April 4 – April 9, 2017
Baseball: The Lions went 3-2 last week. Brett Brubaker (Lake Mary, Fla.) hit .474 on the week with three homeruns, 10 RBI, six runs scored and two doubles. Zac Brown (Albemarle, N.C.) threw a complete game to beat Catawba 3-1 Saturday afternoon. As a team the Lions hit .363 last week and had a fielding percentage of .980. Pitchers Troy Hall (Greeneville, Tenn.) and Blaine Farrell (Ontario, Canada) picked up wins against Bluefield State prior to the Catawba series. Hunter Merrill (Pittsford, N.Y.) and Matt Honeycutt (China Grove, N.C.) also had a solid week as both hit .375 in the five contests.
Lacrosse: Sophomore attack Jake Trafton (Wilmington, N.C.) produced his first two goals of the season in a contest against Lincoln Memorial over the weekend, while senior defender Asyck Schildt (York, Pa.) had a career-day on the defensive side of the field, collecting six caused turnovers to go along with his five groundballs.
Softball: Krista Romine (Concord, N.C.) led the Lions offensively over the weekend with a stellar .667 batting average. Romine hit a homerun to go along with her five RBI and four runs scored for a Lions' team that went 2-2. Starting pitcher Sydney Elkin (Boca Raton, Fla.) continued her impressive performances as of late, throwing 9.0 innings and allowing only two earned runs. Over the past month she has brought her earned run average down by more than four points.
Men's Track & Field: Noah Allison (Marshall, N.C.) took home a first place finish in the 3000-meter race with a stellar time of 8:55, while Spencer Shade (Fairview, N.C.) won the pole vault event for the second week in a row for the Lions. Markece Cunningham (Tryon, N.C.) posted second place finishes in the discus throw and shot put.
Women's Track & Field: Jordan Bair (New Carlisle, Ohio) continued her impressive performances, taking home first place in the pole vault for the second consecutive week while also setting a new school record after clearing a height of 3.36 meters. Dana Thompson (Bryson City, N.C.) turned in a second place finish in the hammer throw with a distance of 36 meters.
Men's Golf: Harry Butler (Chigwell, England) and Adam Lumley (Coventry, England) led the Lions to a third-place finish at the Tennessee River Rumble. Both players shot an even-par 72, good enough for an 8th-place finish overall. Callum Ritchie (Dunden, Scotland) finished in a tie for 15th with a +1, 73, his best performance of the season. Luke Challis (Nuneaton, England) and Francesc Llinas (Mexico) also had a great day on the links, posting respectable +5, 77s, finishing in a tie for 38th.
Men's Tennis: Carlos Riesco (Montcada Reixach, Spain) picked up the lone win for the Lions against Carson-Newman over the weekend, taking down Rodolpho Schwarz in three sets (6-7, 6-3, 10-6) during the No. 3 singles match.
Women's Tennis: Dante Hart (Nassau, Bahamas) and Jade Henke (Perth, Australia) tallied the lone win for the Blue and Gold, taking down Alisa Liashova and Klara Vuckovic in the No. 2 doubles slot (8-5).
